as we know here in Nigeria,passing the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) with flying colors is not just the only procedure to get admittion into any of the high institutions in the country.
Nowadays,Nigeria has several universities,polytechnics,monotechnichnics,colleges of education and so on and so forth.Some are privately owned by individuals,somed operated by the states while others are managed by the federal government of the country.
Students in Nigeria also have the right on choosing which of the examinations to enroll for.There is the one conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC),the National Examination Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB). There is also the General Certificate Examination (GCE) conducted by WAEC.Some institutions allow a combination of results from two of the examinations where possible.
After passing the SSCE,in which a student must pass five subjects including Mathematics and English,the next steps are listed below:
1. Writing JAMB:first and foremost is to enroll for the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) to participate in the Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME).The board fixes a general cut-off mark for admissions in the country and also places candidates in the various universities applied for.
The placement of the students follows their catchment areas as well as their choice of institutions.
Though JAMB does the general admission process based on the examination and those who passed,the tertiary institutions take candidates based on their capacities.This is why it is often advised by analysts in the sector for candidates to look beyond the JAMB results which is,though,a major requirement.
2. Post-UTME:As a result of the need to build capacity and ensure that only the fittest actually get admitted into institutions.The various universities and polytechnics now engage in what is called post-UTME examinations,which is sometimes a screening exercise.Here,the students are made to register and make some payments.
After the screening,the result is calculated with the JAMB score of a particular candidate to know if he or she would make it as a student of the tertiary institution applied to.Successful candidates have the names published on notice boards of the institutions or on their websites.
3. Admission proper:Here, successful candidates are required to print out their admission letters.This print-out would help them with the registration and clearance process.It is noteworthy that some registrations are done online through institutions’ portals while some still prefer manual processes.
4 Final signing of files:At this stage,the candidate collates files of his print-outs in relation to the registration process for signing by designated officials of the institutions.The candidates’ results are physically examined at this stage.Other items required here include birth certificate or birth declaration statement,medical report,admission letter printed from JAMB,local government of origin and others.
5.Matriculations:Only students who successfully pass through all the stages itemized above can matriculate.During the matriculation,the students swear to be of good behaviour and worthy in character and learning. In some institutions,they are made to sign undertakings.
